A Guide to Asakusa's Hoppy Street: 23 Pubs with Sidewalk Tables for Stew and Drinks from Midday

Published Oct 19, 2026

West of Senso-ji, the street running north to south between Asakusa Rokku and WINS Asakusa is known as Hoppy Street (Hoppy-dori). Also called Koen Hon-dori, it is lined on both sides with casual pubs. Tables and chairs spill out onto the street, and its biggest draw is relaxed open-air drinking from midday.

Beef tendon stew and Hoppy

The street is named after Hoppy, a beer-flavored drink mixed with shochu. Launched in 1948, when beer was a luxury, it became popular as an affordable drink for ordinary people. The street is also nicknamed "Nikomi Street" because so many shops serve beef tendon stew. Each shop seasons it differently, so hopping from pub to pub to compare is part of the fun.

Even now that it draws many tourists, the downtown atmosphere of regulars raising glasses from midday lives on. Just to the north is Hatsune Koji, a back alley that grew out of postwar food stalls.
