Published Sep 25, 2026
With the aim of passing on traditional Japanese culture, Asakusa Shrine regularly opens its shrine office to hold a learning program called "Shakoya." It offers a valuable opportunity for people of all ages, from children to adults, to learn about Shinto, shrines, and festivals, as well as ancient traditional culture, customs, performing arts, and crafts.
It is held on the 1st of every month (except January and July). On weekdays it starts at 6:00 p.m., and on weekends and public holidays it starts at 4:00 p.m. Participation is free, but participants cannot attend barefoot, so please wear socks or stockings. Advance reservations are required via the reservation form, by phone, or in person at the shrine office.
The October 2026 Shakoya, titled "The World of Medicinal Cuisine – Beauty-Boosting Sweet Soups," will focus on learning about yakuzen. Yakuzen is a dietary approach that combines ingredients according to an individual's physical condition and the season, aiming to prevent illness and maintain health. It has been planned as an opportunity to reflect on your own body as the weather grows colder.
The session will be held on Thursday, October 1, Reiwa 8 (2026), from 6:00 p.m. for about two hours. Capacity is 40 participants. It is a place to learn together as the next generation of bearers of tradition while engaging in exchange between generations.
