Jodo-e (Buddha's Enlightenment Day)

Jodo-e (Buddha's Enlightenment Day)

On December 8, the Jodo-e ceremony is solemnly held in the Main Hall of Senso-ji Temple. This annual event commemorates the Buddha's attainment of enlightenment after long years of ascetic practice, and celebrates it while reflecting on his revered figure.

At this time of year, when the bustle of the year-end season begins to fill the streets, a quiet and pure atmosphere fills the Main Hall, giving worshippers a chance to collect their thoughts once more before the year comes to a close.

Jodo-e is regarded as one of the important ceremonies related to the life of the Buddha, alongside Hana Matsuri (Flower Festival) and Nehan-e (Nirvana Ceremony), and it is also a valuable opportunity to contemplate "enlightenment," the fundamental event in Buddhism. The ceremony held in the majestic Main Hall of Senso-ji conveys to the present day the form of faith that has been passed down in this place since ancient times, giving visitors a sense of solemnity.

Perhaps the very busiest days of the year-end are the best time to experience such a traditional event and quietly press your hands together in prayer. When you visit Asakusa, please stop by the Main Hall and feel the atmosphere of Jodo-e for yourself.
