Published Oct 19, 2026
A special autumn festival where you can enjoy gorgeous dahlias is now underway at the Peony Garden of Ueno Toshogu Shrine.
More than 200 dahlia plants in 120 varieties, differing in color, shape and way of blooming, will decorate the autumn garden. They include the "NAMAHAGE Dahlia" series, an original variety from Akita Prefecture, as well as Daisuisho, Kisei and Moko Purple.
Throughout the garden, seasonal decorative displays, mixed plantings and bonsai are set up. Autumn flowers and grasses such as burnet (Waremokou), thoroughwort (Fujibakama) and cosmos can also be enjoyed alongside the dahlias.
Highlights
- Dahlia scenery set against authentic Edo-period architecture, such as the former Kan'ei-ji Five-Story Pagoda and the rows of stone lanterns lining the approach to Toshogu Shrine
- Charming scenes you can see only here, such as dahlias blooming beneath Japanese parasols used as eaves
The garden is open from 9:30 to 16:30 (last entry).
