Autumn Higan-e
The Autumn Higan-e service is solemnly held at the Main Hall of Senso-ji on Autumnal Equinox Day. Higan-e is a long-standing annual observance in which people renew their feelings of gratitude and offer memorial prayers for their ancestors.
On the Autumnal Equinox Day, day and night are almost equal in length. For this reason, it is said to be a time when the world of the departed and the world of the living are more closely connected, and since ancient times it has been regarded as a fitting time to honor one's ancestors. On the day, the chanting of sutras by the monks echoes quietly through the Main Hall, and visitors burn incense and press their palms together in prayer, each with their own thoughts.
As autumn deepens in Asakusa, people can be seen visiting the temple grounds while savoring the changing of the seasons. Beyond being a place of prayer, it is also an opportunity for us, who are so easily caught up in the busyness of daily life, to reflect anew on our connection with family and ancestors.
If you have the chance to visit Senso-ji, why not attend this Autumn Higan-e as well and offer your prayers in a tranquil moment? In the historic district of Asakusa, you will be able to encounter a form of prayer that has been passed down unchanged.
