Senso-ji Kiku Kuyo-e (Chrysanthemum Memorial Service)

Published Sep 1, 2026

The Kiku Kuyo-e (Chrysanthemum Memorial Service), a beloved seasonal tradition that adds color to autumn at Senso-ji, is held every year on October 18 on the temple grounds. Worshippers bring chrysanthemums they have carefully tended and offer them to Kannon, praying with gratitude for daily blessings and for good health.

After the service, the offered chrysanthemums are exchanged on the spot for fresh ones. It is said that displaying the chrysanthemums you take home at the entrance of your house and similar places wards off evil spirits, so many people look forward to this exchange. Chrysanthemums of every color line the grounds, creating a scene in which the crisp fragrance of the flowers evokes the deepening of autumn.

Highlight: The Golden Dragon Dance

One of the highlights of the event is the powerful Golden Dragon Dance performed on the temple grounds. The sight of the golden, gleaming dragon dancing to the sound of flutes and drums is full of impact and never fails to captivate worshippers and tourists alike. Being able to enjoy the contrasting charms of the quiet beauty of the chrysanthemums and the dynamic dance of the golden dragon at the same time is truly the special appeal of this event.

Handed down through a long history, the Kiku Kuyo-e is also an important milestone that heralds the arrival of autumn in Asakusa. Why not visit Senso-ji with plenty of time to spare on the day, and spend a moment surrounded by the scent of chrysanthemums as you watch the Golden Dragon Dance?
