Jūya-e (Ten Nights Service)
Held every autumn at Senso-ji, the "Jūya-e" is a Buddhist service in which participants praise the virtues of Amida Buddha and quietly practice while chanting the nenbutsu. Originally the event is held over a long period of ten days and nights, but at Senso-ji it is condensed into a single day, October 17, and performed in the Main Hall.
On the day, following the ritual of "Jōgyō Zanmai," monks continuously chant the nenbutsu before the principal image enshrined in the Main Hall, creating a solemn atmosphere. In the usually bustling town of Asakusa, this is the one day when a calm and solemn air fills the Main Hall, and visitors will find themselves listening closely to the sound of the chanting.
Held in a season when the deepening of autumn can be felt, this service offers a moment to step away from the hectic everyday routine, press your hands together, and settle your mind. If you have the chance to visit Asakusa, please stop by the Main Hall and experience the voices of the nenbutsu that have been passed down since ancient times.
