Shirasagi no Mai (White Heron Dance)
When the dancers, dressed in white costumes, quietly appear on the spacious grounds of Senso-ji, the air seems to grow crisp and still. This year again, the White Heron Dance will be performed on the temple grounds on November 3.
True to its name, the White Heron Dance is a traditional performing art in which dancers wear costumes modeled after a bird spreading its wings, and show graceful footwork in time with the sounds of flutes and drums. Because it is a rare performance presented only a few times a year, not a few worshippers are said to be eagerly awaiting the day.
Every slow, measured movement of the dance carries forms handed down through a long history, quietly moving those who watch. The unique solemn atmosphere created by the majestic setting of the temple grounds is also one of the highlights.
In the clear autumn air, the sight of white feathered robes fluttering will feel like gazing at a picture scroll. If you are planning to visit Asakusa, we hope you will take this opportunity to see this tradition-filled dance from beginning to end.
