Taito City, Tokyo, will conduct a pedestrian zone social experiment around Kaminarimon in Asakusa, an area crowded with tourists.
Overview
- Dates: Sunday, October 25 and Sunday, November 15, 2026 (2 days)
- Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed to vehicles)
- Sections: Kaminarimon-dori, which runs east-west in front of Kaminarimon, and part of Namiki-dori, which runs south from Kaminarimon
Purpose
According to the city, Kaminarimon-dori has narrow sidewalks, and with many tourists passing through, pedestrians spill onto the roadway, among other issues. In this social experiment, the city will check how people move and what effects there are on the surrounding area when vehicles are restricted, with the aim of creating a comfortable walking space and improving circulation around the area. The results are expected to be used in future urban planning discussions.
