Limited-Time "Edo Iki Kōshodō" Opens: Exhibits and Experiences on Tsutaya Jūzaburō and Edo Culture

What Is Edo Iki Kōshodō?

Carrying on the spirit of Edo Shin-Yoshiwara Kōshodō, which drew crowds while the drama was on air, "Edo Iki Kōshodō" will open for a limited time. It aims to create a place that inspires visitors to come to the Yoshiwara area (present-day Senzoku, Taito-ku), where Tsutaya Jūzaburō was born and raised.

Facility Information

  • Period: Friday, October 16 – Sunday, December 6
  • Hours: 11:00–16:00
  • Closed: Every Monday (the following day if Monday is a public holiday)
  • Location: Yoshiwara Kaikan (4-24-12 Senzoku, Taito-ku, Tokyo)
  • Admission: Free (no goods will be sold)

Exhibits

In addition to works related to Tsutaya Jūzaburō, such as the "Yoshiwara Saiken," a large number of ukiyo-e prints and kibyōshi from that era will be on display. The exhibits are also scheduled to be changed during the period. Visitors can also see props actually used in the filming of the taiga drama "Berabō: Tsutajū Eiga no Yume Banashi."

Ukiyo-e Stamp Rally

By stamping over one another at five locations in the Yoshiwara and Asakusa area (Edo Iki Kōshodō, Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, Shōbō-ji, Yoshiwara Shrine and Taito City Public Hall), a single ukiyo-e print is completed. By layering five different colors, you can experience the multicolor woodblock printing technique. The completed ukiyo-e can be used as a postcard.

Events to Experience Edo Culture

Events include talk events, guided walking tours, Japanese-bound notepad making, rakugo, terakoya (temple school) experiences and ukiyo-e printing experiences. On the first weekend after opening (October 17 and 18), walking tours and an ozashiki dance performance by Shimabara Tayū will be held. Many events require advance registration, which is accepted through a dedicated form; a lottery will be held if there are many applicants.
