Local News AsakusaKaminarimon-dori Pedestrian Space Expansion Trial (Full Vehicle Closure)
Published Oct 20, 2026
In the "Asakusa Future Vision Draft Town Planning Vision" formulated in March 2026 (Reiwa 8), Taito City set "creating spaces that are enjoyable to walk in" as its ideal for the neighborhood. This social experiment is part of that effort.
Overview
- Dates: Sunday, October 25 and Sunday, November 15, 2026 (Reiwa 8)
- Hours: 11:00–15:00 on each day (traffic restrictions in effect 11:00–16:00 on each day)
- Location: Parts of Kaminarimon-dori and Namiki-dori (from the Kaminarimon 1-chome intersection to the Azumabashi intersection, and from the Kaminarimon intersection to the middle section of Namiki-dori)
- Details: All vehicles will be prohibited, and the pedestrian space will be expanded
A road that is usually a place for "passing through" will be used as a space where people can walk, stop and spend time as they like. The trial will examine how people use the space, as well as its effects on car traffic and roadside areas, in a real urban setting. It is an opportunity to think about the future of Asakusa's road space, where liveliness and comfort coexist.
Details are available on the Taito City official website. For inquiries, contact the Regional Development Division 2 (Tel: 03-5246-1366).
